Matthew Brock
Attorney at Law · O’Reilly Masciale Law Firm · Charleston, SC
Matthew Brock is a South Carolina trial lawyer with a uniquely comprehensive background in the justice system—having served as a probate judge, prosecutor, public defender, and now as a practicing trial attorney.
Matt grew up in Grayson, Georgia graduating from Grayson High School before earning his undergraduate degree from Tuskegee University in 2013. Following his undergraduate studies, he pursued his legal education at the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law. His academic and professional training laid the foundation for a legal career defined by both courtroom experience and public service.
After graduating from law school, Matt began his legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable Judge Amy McCullough in the Richland County Probate Court in 2019. In this role, he gained direct exposure to probate litigation, estate administration, and judicial decision-making at the county level. This experience provided him with early insight into how legal disputes impact families during some of their most difficult and sensitive moments.
Following his clerkship, Matt transitioned into criminal defense work as a Richland County Public Defender, where he represented individuals facing felony criminal charges. In this capacity, he developed firsthand experience advocating for clients navigating the criminal justice system and gained a deep understanding of defense strategy, trial tactics, constitutional protections, and the real-world consequences of criminal proceedings.
In 2020, Matt was appointed as an Associate Probate Judge in Richland County, becoming the Honorable Matthew Brock. At the time of his appointment, he was among the youngest individuals to ever serve in this judicial capacity in the state of South Carolina and the only African American male probate judge serving in that role. As a judge, he presided over matters involving estates, guardianships, mental health, and probate administration, gaining invaluable experience in judicial reasoning, statutory interpretation, and equitable decision-making.
After his service on the bench, Matt continued his public service as a City Prosecutor for the City of Columbia, South Carolina, where he represented the city in criminal matters. In this role, he worked on the enforcement side of the justice system, handling prosecutions, trying cases, and gaining further insight into how cases are developed, evaluated, and resolved from the government’s perspective.
Today, Matt is a trial lawyer based in Charleston, South Carolina. His practice is built on the rare combination of experiences across every major role in the courtroom system—judiciary, prosecution, and defense.
This multi-perspective background allows him to evaluate cases with a depth of understanding that goes beyond a single legal role. He brings a practical, informed, and strategic approach to each matter, with a focus on clarity, preparation, and aggressively effective trial advocacy.
